Only in a select few locations right now. But that's what The RePickle Project is all about.
Recycling facilities are designed to sort household packaging; cardboard, cans, bottles, cartons, etc. Items that aren't on the list of accepted materials (like toys and sporting goods) will get removed as contamination from the system. So we need to find another solution.
While there are many different brands of balls, our data so far tells us that balls are made out of two kinds of plastic – polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP). These plastics are commonly used in many applications from automobiles to packaging.
Save your pickleballs! Don't throw them away - and keep checking back with us. When we have a solution, we'll let you know. You are also welcome to contact us (RePickleProject@gmail.com) to mail balls to us, but we don't want to rely on mailing as a long term solution.
Lots of things! Check out our gallery and Instagram page to see some examples. Balls are made of great plastic and can be remade into a wide variety of things.
It might be possible. We are working with a brand that makes pickleballs here in the US. We hope to do experiments with different levels of recycled content in balls. Stay tuned for updates!
We have collected and recycled thousands of balls! We've coordinated lab testing, worked with several commercial recyclers and they have made products to prove the recyclability of pickleballs. We are now working with several national companies who will pilot logistical solutions to scale up collection and hauling to recyclers. There is much work to be done but we are well on our way! Check back with us for updates.
The RePickle Project is a 501(c)3 non-profit dedicated to the sole mission of recycling pickleballs. Meet the team behind the effort on the About Us page.
